Repurpose Jewellery: Transforming Cherished Heirlooms

Deciding What to Keep

An inherited piece can matter deeply even when its design does not suit you. If a ring, necklace or bracelet has been sitting unworn, it may be worth considering a remount.

That does not mean every heirloom should be changed. Its original design may be part of what you value. A remount can give an existing gemstone a new setting; reusing the old metal is a separate decision.

It can also be a chance to talk with your family about what the piece means and what should be carried forward.

What a Remount Can Offer

Repurposing begins with materials you already have, but the right approach depends on their condition and the design you want. The aim is to keep what matters to you and make something that fits your life now.

  • Family meaning—Keep a stone or detail that reminds you of the person who wore it.

  • Existing materials—Begin with a suitable stone you already own.

  • Personal style—Choose proportions, a setting and a finish you will enjoy wearing.

What Is a Remount?

A remount means resetting an existing gemstone or gemstones in a different mounting. A broader redesign may also involve the original metal. At Lessard Coutu, remounting is part of our custom jewellery work. The stones and metal need to be assessed before deciding what can be reused.

Before You Change an Heirloom

Owning the original materials does not mean the new piece will cost only the labour. A design may need new metal, additional stones or work on the existing components.

Consider which parts carry the meaning for you: the stone, the shape, an engraving or the piece as a whole.

Reusing a suitable stone keeps an existing material in use.

Some Design Possibilities

Depending on the pieces and their condition, possibilities include:

  • An engagement ring centred on an inherited diamond.

  • A pendant adapted from a brooch that is suitable for alteration.

  • Earrings using compatible gemstones from more than one piece.

The best result keeps something you care about in a piece you will actually wear.

If you have a piece you are considering changing, contact the atelier for an assessment and tell us what you hope to keep.
