Selling Gold to Lessard Coutu

Before You Sell

Gold has a market value that changes over time. Selling jewellery is a separate decision from investing in gold. At Lessard Coutu, we buy gold, silver and platinum jewellery, coins and scrap; we do not buy or sell bullion.

Before selling, consider whether the piece has a use or significance you would prefer to preserve. Repairing or remounting it may be worth discussing alongside a sale.

Understanding an Offer

For scrap gold, an offer takes account of the gold content and the market price, together with the costs and terms of the transaction.

  • Metal content—Ask how the metal is identified and its weight and purity assessed.

  • Price—The quoted market price of gold is a reference, not a promise that a piece will sell for that amount.

  • Terms—Understand the offer, any deductions and the payment arrangements before agreeing.

Buying Gold and Refining Gold

Buying a piece of gold jewellery and refining its metal are different activities. Melting changes the metal’s form; it does not, on its own, establish its purity. Refining removes impurities, and assay testing measures the precious-metal content.

The Market Price Can Move

Gold prices respond to several interacting factors, including supply and demand, currency movements, interest rates and investor activity. Demand can rise during periods of uncertainty, but a price increase is never assured. The relationship between interest rates and gold prices is also variable.

Preparing for a Sale

  1. Check the reference price—Use a reputable market source, and check the currency and date of the quotation.

  2. Ask about assessment—Understand how the metal content is established and what the result means for the offer.

  3. Read the terms—Compare what you would receive after any deductions, and ask about payment before accepting.
